Discovery center recognizes that positive discipline teaches and encourages a healthy development of self-esteem. While keeping this belief system, we also know that children can and will exhibit inappropriate behaviors occasionally. When this occurs, the situation must be evaluated individually and addressed appropriately.
When a dispute between two children occurs, the teacher will remain aware and observe weather or not they are solving their issues independently. The teachers must remain calm and in control. She/he must model the behavior she expects. If the issue can not be resolved by the two children, the problem will be addressed by the teacher, helping the children understand that there are options, and they have a chance to solve the issue themselves while encouraging them to find a solution. The teacher will acknowledge feelings at this time.
If a child is repeatedly overly aggressive, destructive of another child's work or extremely disruptive to the class, he/she may be asked to leave the area and choose another one, if talking things through has not resulted in better self control. Discovery Center believes that parent involvement is an important tool in resolving issues such as this, as well as working together as a team with consistency both at school and at home. If it becomes a situation that is harmful to the other children at Discovery Center and we can not resolve it together with the parents, we may ask them to make other arrangements for their child.
Discovery Center uses positive discipline to encourage learning from mistakes rather than the focus being on humiliation and lowering self-esteem. By using our techniques, children are learning to handle future problem and develop inter controls.
Staff will continuously supervise children during disciplinary actions
Corporal punishment is unacceptable at Discovery Center. Any staff member exhibiting this kind of action will have their employment immediately terminated.
